Epilogue (not a love story) → sanasanz.com

“All women deserve a happy ending. If not, a decent farewell. But the reality is, we live in a dying and decaying world full of imperfect people. ”

Love and Discipline

Once a upon a time, when our world was vast and clean, the seas teemed with myriad’s of frolicking fishes; the mountains stood majestic in their lush and verdant capes; the soil naturally fertile; the air quite fresh and cool; the distant stars glittered in the smog-free ebony skies; people unafraid to walk along the streets at night; the media full of wholesome entertainment and news that gladdened the heart.

But alas, all those seem so very long ago! Our world today is a far cry from yesterday’s.

Man, with his boundless intelligence, creativity and innovativeness managed to create many wonderful things to promote his well-being, to embellish his existence in this world with the wonders that science and technology can give. Yet, ironically, his creations are the very monsters that are now threatening to annihilate him and his ecosystem.

Yes, my friends, it is a matter of “do” or “die”. But I’m not only referring to our physical environment, I am referring also to our social, political and cultural environment. Let us focus our attention not on the entire global community, but on a little area in the “village”; called Philippines, for we are not only earthlings, but particularly, we are FILIPINOS.

Now, we are adrift in the sea of turmoil and confusion. We are lashed by the cruel waves of poverty, criminality, natural calamities, graft and corruption in the government, and also moral decadence that has caused the loss of family values. We are surrounded and attacked by “sharks” named drug addiction, child abuse and sexual abuse, among others.

Crises to the left, crises to the right! Oil crisis, rice crisis, power crisis, water crisis, traffic crisis, family crisis!

No, there is no cause for despair! Despite all these crises, we should remain undaunted. We should remain hopeful that we will survive as individuals and as a nation. We must look forward to a tomorrow that is peaceful, happy and progressive.

Now you may ask me: “How?” Well, easy. One key to survival is discipline. We must develop self-discipline because a person who has self-discipline is able to control the evil forces within himself, thus, he will not resort to crime and lawlessness just to quench his thirst for wordily goods.

If you have self-discipline, you are a righteous person. You can control your emotions, your thoughts and your actions. It is discipline that will make you stand for your rights, accept your faults humbly, and do waht your conscience dictates. And has your conscience ever gone wrong?

Another key and the better one is love - love of God. If we love God, we obey Him and accept His will. We love His creations - the trees, the animals, the seas, the mountains, everything that comprises our environment. If we love our environment, we preserve it and not destroy it. If we love God, we also love our neighbor as we love our own selves. He may be a member of our family or a complete stranger who needs our help. If we love God, we also love our country. Her joy will be our joy, her sorrow our own too. Indeed love, yes love - does it all.

Only when we have discipline, only when we have love; that our world of yesteryears will come back to us. Our beloved country will rise from the ashes of poverty and despondency. This is not a wishful thinking my friends. This is reality. If you want to be part of this beautiful reality, then do your share.

*My first oratorical piece way back my high school years*
